The Committees
What each committee is actually responsible for — because a trade only appears in this site's reports when the traded company sits inside a committee's jurisdiction.
Where these definitions come from. Not from us, and not from an encyclopedia. The jurisdiction of every standing committee is set out in the chambers' own standing rules — House Rule X and Senate Rule XXV — published by the Government Publishing Office. Each committee below carries its rule citation, its own official jurisdiction page, and a Wikipedia link for convenience.
This matters for reading the rest of the site. Our committee-to-sector map is what connects a trade in, say, a pharmaceutical company to a hearing in Energy and Commerce. Publishing the rule beside the mapping means you can check that connection against the source instead of taking our word for it. Where we map a committee to sectors, those sectors are listed.

Why some committees are deliberately unmapped
Appropriations, Budget, Rules, Oversight and Ways and Means touch nearly everything the government does. Mapping them to sectors would link almost every trade to almost every hearing and mean nothing at all, so they are left out of the relevance engine on purpose. They still appear here, and their members' trades are still in the database — they simply do not generate jurisdiction-based pairings.
